What are
lip injections?
Lip filler refers to a cosmetic procedure in which a gel is injected into the lips to enhance their size, shape, and overall appearance.
The most commonly used dermal fillers for lip augmentation contain hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring substance found in the body that helps maintain hydration and plumpness in the skin. When injected into the lips, HA fillers provide temporary results by attracting and retaining water, thereby adding volume and creating a fuller appearance. The procedure involves the application of a topical numbing cream to minimize discomfort, followed by the injection of the filler into specific areas of the lips to achieve the desired effect. The amount of filler used depends on the individual's goals, natural lip shape, and the practitioner's expertise.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
The procedure involves injecting hyaluronic acid dermal filler, a gel-like substance, into specific areas of the lips to enhance shape and volume!

THE FACTS
The frequency of lip filler treatments can vary depending on several factors, including the specific filler used, individual metabolism, desired outcome, and personal preference. However, in general, lip filler treatments are not permanent and the effects typically last 9 to 18 months.
Topical anesthetic is applied upon arrival; numbing can take up to 30 minutes.
The procedure itself typically takes around 30 minutes to complete once injections are initiated.
WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR APPOINTMENT:
Lip filler appointments last 45-60 minutes, although the injections themselves are typically executed in 20 minutes or less. Before photos are taken on all of our patients upon arrival and prior to any injections of dermal filler. At Faces in Bloom, we are just as excited as you are to see results. During your appointment, the provider will listen to your facial concerns, conduct a thorough assessment, present procedure options, and explain risks/benefits in achieving your desired outcome. If a treatment plan is agreed upon, topical anesthetic will be applied or a dental block performed (specifically for lip filler injections) in order to lessen the discomfort, as dermal filler treatment can be mildly uncomfortable. Patients rate dermal filler injections a 3/10 on the pain scale. All dermal fillers used at Faces In Bloom contain lidocaine, resulting in a more enjoyable experience.
HOW MUCH DOWNTIME SHOULD YOU PLAN FOR?
Recovery time after lip filler injections is dependent on several factors, including whether or not pre-appointment instructions were followed, patient-specific response, area injected, and technique executed. Plan for 3-5 days of social downtime, as an overfilled appearance of the treatment area, bruising, swelling, temporary numbness, and lumps/bumps are anticipated reactions. These conditions can be remedied with topical icing, daily antihistamines, and avoidance of blood thinners (alcohol, caffeine, fish oil, and ibuprofen).
Following injections, it is advised that you refrain from strenuous activity for 24-48 hours to help minimize swelling and bruising.
HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR TREATMENT:
Preparation for lip filler injections is minimal, but extremely important to ensure you get the best results possible, with as little downtime as possible.
Because of the potential for bruising during lip filler injections, you should avoid taking any medications that may act as blood thinners for one week prior to your appointment. These medications include Omega 3’s (fish oil), all NSAIDs (IBUPROFEN®, ALEVE®, ASPIRIN®, MOTRIN®), Vitamin E, Ginkgo Biloba, and Garlic supplements. Alcohol and caffeine also increase the risk of bruising; avoid their consumption for three days prior to injections.
We suggest that everyone pre-treat with Arnica Montana 3 days before your treatment by dissolving 5 pellets underneath your tongue, 3 times per day. When pre-treating with Arnica Montana, avoid drinking coffee 20 minutes before and after each dose. Arnica can be purchased at most health food stores, including Whole Foods, Chuck’s Produce, and Trader Joes. It can also be purchased on Amazon.
Lastly, on the day of your appointment, we ask that you pre-medicate with a second-generation antihistamine (10mg of ZYRTEC®, CLARITIN®, or ALLEGRA® ). Avoid BENADRYL®, as it is sedating. Doing this will substantially reduce swelling from injections.
WHEN WILL YOU SEE RESULTS?
Although results from dermal fillers can be seen immediately, swelling, bruising, and redness are anticipated reactions that occur directly after treatment. These side effects may take up to 14 days to resolve; therefore, plan accordingly when booking your dermal filler appointment. Following pre-treatment instructions may cut down this recovery period significantly. Full results will be seen at 2 weeks.

Is a lip filler procedure painful?
Many people are concerned about the potential discomfort associated with lip filler injections. At Faces in Bloom, we use a strong, medical grade numbing cream or a local anesthetic injection (a nerve block) to minimize any pain or discomfort during the treatment. Most individuals report mild discomfort or a slight pinch during the injections, but overall, it is well tolerated.
What are the potential side effects?
Although very rare, a risk when undergoing any type of dermal filler procedure is called a Vascular Obstruction (VO). If dermal filler were to be administered into an artery, an obstruction could occur, disrupting blood flow. It is important to always go to an experienced medical aesthetic provider and receive hyaluronic acid dermal filler, as an enzyme called hyaluronidase can reverse such a complication. We use only hyaluronic acid dermal fillers at Faces in Bloom! Safe, customizable, and completely reversible!
Can the results be reversed or adjusted?
Absolutely! One advantage of using hyaluronic acid fillers is that they can be partially or completely reversed if necessary. Hyaluronidase, an enzyme, can be injected to dissolve the filler in case of dissatisfaction or complications. Additionally, if you're not fully satisfied with the initial results, adjustments can be made during a follow-up appointment to achieve your desired outcome.
