How Does It Work?

Deoxycholic acid, the active ingredient within KYBELLA®, is a naturally-occurring molecule found within the human digestive system. Its role is to break down and absorb dietary fat. When the synthetic form of this molecule is injected directly into the area of fat beneath the chin, the fat is destroyed, leaving you with a more defined, slim, and youthful-looking jawline.

The great thing about KYBELLA®? The results are permanent! Once fat cells have been destroyed, they will never regenerate. As long as you maintain a healthy weight after your procedure (so that new fat cells do not form), you will be able to enjoy your slimmer facial profile indefinitely.

CONTRAINDICATIONS TO RECEIVING KYBELLA®

While KYBELLA® is an ideal solution for most adults with submental fullness (double chin), the treatment is not right for everyone. Women who are currently pregnant, trying to become pregnant, breastfeeding, or patients with an active infection in the treatment area should not receive KYBELLA® injections. If you have excess skin, rather than fat, below the chin, your treatment will not be effective. If there is current, or a prior history of, dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), do not undergo KYBELLA® treatment.

What to Expect at Your KYBELLA® Appointment:

When you arrive at your KYBELLA® appointment, an ice pack will be provided to you so that you can topically numb the treatment area, ensuring maximum comfort throughout the procedure. Once the numbing has taken effect, your provider will strategically mark the injection sites under your chin by drawing a grid-like pattern, aiding in even and natural-looking results. Once marked, you will receive multiple injections across your chin with a fine needle (usually 20 to 30 needle pokes). The total number of injections you receive will vary based on the amount of fullness present beneath your chin as well as your goals for the treatment.


The injections take only a few minutes to administer, with your entire KYBELLA® appointment lasting only 20 minutes. You should feel minimal discomfort during this injectable treatment.

In a clinical trial, 82 percent of patients reported significantly improved satisfaction with their appearance after undergoing KYBELLA®.

How Much Downtime Does KYBELLA® Require?

After your KYBELLA® treatment, you will likely have swelling, bruising, or numbness under your chin. This is an anticipated reaction and can even be correlated with the amount of fat destruction occurring; therefore, do not be alarmed. Plan for 7-10 days of visual swelling and bruising, with numbness and tingling that could last up to 3 months.

Although KYBELLA® begins to work and destroy fat cells immediately, it will take weeks for your body to complete the process. Therefore, results will gradually be observed over the next 4-6 weeks.

How To Prepare for Your KYBELLA® Treatment:

It is important to have a comprehensive assessment with your medical aesthetic provider prior to scheduling a KYBELLA® treatment. At this visit, your provider will go over your previous medical history, previous and future cosmetic procedures to your neck, face, and chin, as well as contraindications for treatment.

How Much Does KYBELLA® Cost?

Some patients may be able to achieve their desired results with one KYBELLA® treatment, while others may require a series of 2-4 KYBELLA® treatments to reach their aesthetic goals. Variables that affect the number of treatments required are: the amount of submental fat present, your body’s response to the medication, and your desired outcome. If multiple treatments are needed to reach desired results, they must be executed at least one month apart.
